Pacific Seafood Releases Third Annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report
On Earth Day, April 22, 2020, Pacific Seafood, based in Portland, Oregon, published its third annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report. The report outlines the company's commitment to social responsibility in all aspects of its operations, from supporting coastal communities and employees, to sustainable fishing practices and traceability, to food safety standards, and environmental protection during 2019. Key points from the report include: Sustainability The company initiated a unique electronic monitoring system in the Texas Gulf shrimp fishery, aiming to achieve MSC certification by November 2020. It has 21 Marine Stewardship Council certified facilities and 6 Best Aquaculture Practices certified facilities and/or farms. It currently offers 40 certified sustainable (MSC, BAP, or ASC) species. Environment The company processed almost all of its raw protein waste into 13 million pounds of usable seafood meal and oil, preventing 80 million pounds of fish waste from entering U.S. landfills. It reduced the material used in its corrugated boxes by 10% through size optimization and recycled approximately 350,000lbs. of metal in 2019 through a partnership with Schnitzer Steel in Oregon. Community/Industry Support Pacific Seafood is a member of the Stronger America Through Seafood Board, which aims to increase U.S. production of healthful, sustainable, and affordable seafood. It played an active role in securing 25.8 million for the CA Dungeness crab fishery in response to a 2015-2016 disaster. It also supports affordable workforce housing in coastal communities and donated to more than 160 nonprofit organizations. Our Team Members The company introduced a full tuition assistance program through Ashford University and was recognized by the Portland Business Journal as one of the Healthiest Employers of Oregon for the fourth year in a row. It gives back up to 20% of its profits to its team members each year through 401K contributions and incentives. Value Chain The company's proprietary traceability technology allows it to track any product it processes from the body of water it was harvested in, all the way through the supply chain to the store or restaurant that sold it. It conducts 28 short weight tests per month across its seven distribution facilities to ensure weights are correct.
