Third anaerobic digestion facility acquired by ABP
Olleco, the renewable energy arm of ABP Food Group, has recently completed the purchase of a bioenergy facility located in Westcott Park, Buckinghamshire, from Renewi plc, a prominent company specializing in converting waste into useful products. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. This facility boasts the capability to transform 96,000 tonnes of food waste per annum into up to 3.2 megawatts of green electricity and 4.8 megawatts of renewable heat, sufficient to supply energy to around 6,000 households. This acquisition marks the addition of a third anaerobic digestion (AD) plant to Olleco's portfolio, joining its existing facilities in Aylesbury and Liverpool. Robert Behan, the Managing Director of Olleco, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting its benefits in terms of increased capacity and enhanced service delivery to their extensive customer base of 50,000 across the UK. He also noted that this acquisition aligns with ABP Food Group's renewable energy objectives and exemplifies the implementation of a circular carbon economy. Olleco specializes in the collection and recycling of food waste and used cooking oil from the retail and foodservice industries, converting these materials into bio diesel, bio gas, and bio fertiliser. The company is a significant employer, with a workforce of over 600 across 15 UK locations. ABP Food Group has earned a reputation for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Notably, in 2015, it inaugurated the world's first carbon-neutral abattoir in Ellesmere, utilizing waste from food processing and used cooking oil to meet the site's energy needs. Furthermore, ABP distinguished itself last year by becoming the first food company to receive four accreditations from The Carbon Trust, acknowledging its efforts to minimize environmental impact throughout its supply chain.
