Thai Union has been placed at the top of the Seafood Stewardship Index once again, in recognition of its efforts towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

BANGKOK – On October 12, 2021, Thai Union Group PCL achieved the top position in the Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI) for its outstanding contributions towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), marking its leadership position for the second time in a row. The company's efforts were independently evaluated, showcasing leading performance in governance and strategy, traceability, and social responsibility, out of five key areas. Having also secured the top spot in the index's first edition in 2019, Thai Union continued its leadership despite the 2020 hiatus of the SSI due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The SSI's evaluation encompassed the world's 30 largest seafood enterprises, aiming to gauge their impact on sustainable ocean and coastal ecosystem management and their advancement of the SDGs. This assessment also considered the implementation of responsible social practices throughout their supply chains. The assessment by the SSI, developed by the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA), begins with recognizing a company's awareness of its environmental and societal impacts. It further examines the measures a company takes to mitigate negative effects and foster a seafood industry that safeguards natural resources and supports its workforce. Thai Union was particularly commended for its robust sustainability strategy and stakeholder engagement, earning the highest score in governance and strategy. Thiraphong Chansiri, CEO of Thai Union, expressed pride in the company's repeat recognition by the SSI, attributing it to the team's relentless pursuit of sustainability and improvement within the global seafood industry, in alignment with the company's vision of "Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans." Thai Union's exemplary traceability practices, including its participation in the Ocean Disclosure Project and commitments through the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) and the Global Dialogue for Seafood Traceability (GDST), were highlighted as key factors in its ranking. The company's dedication to ensuring fair working and living conditions, compliance monitoring, and supplier engagement for performance improvement were also recognized, contributing to its top ranking in social responsibility. The SSI emphasized the critical role of major seafood companies in driving positive change towards sustainability, given the reliance of three billion people on seafood as a dietary staple. About Thai Union Group: For over four decades, Thai Union Group PCL has been at the forefront of the global seafood industry, offering a wide range of high-quality, nutritious, and innovative seafood products. With a workforce of over 44,000 and annual sales surpassing THB 132.4 billion (US$ 4.2 billion), Thai Union is recognized as a leading seafood producer worldwide.
