Thai Union has been awarded a B grade by CDP for its efforts in addressing the challenges of climate change, thanks to its SeaChange® 2030 sustainability initiative.
Thai Union has been awarded a B rating by the CDP for its efforts and transparency in combating climate change, surpassing the global and Asia regional average rating of C. Additionally, the company has earned a spot in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2024. On February 8, 2024, in Bangkok, Thai Union Group PCL, a global leader in the seafood industry, was recognized by the CDP, a non-profit organization focused on environmental disclosure, with a B rating. This accolade reflects the company's dedication and openness in addressing climate change challenges. This achievement follows the company's introduction of its ambitious climate change objectives as part of its SeaChange® 2030 sustainability strategy six months prior. For its first evaluation by the CDP, Thai Union's B rating exceeds both the global and Asia regional C average and the B- average for the food and beverage processing sector. The company achieved A ratings in several areas, including Scope 3 emissions, climate change goals, emissions reduction efforts, low carbon products, and governance. Over 21,000 companies were evaluated by the CDP based on their responses to climate change, deforestation, and water security questionnaires. Thai Union's Chief Sustainability Officer, Adam Brennan, emphasized the company's commitment to addressing climate change through its SeaChange® 2030 strategy, which includes 11 interconnected goals aimed at significant global impact and environmental stewardship. The company aims to reduce its Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050, with both targets verified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and aligned with the Paris Agreement. Thai Union has dedicated its entire 2022 net profit of THB 7.2 billion (USD 200 million) to the SeaChange® 2030 initiative, including a THB 250 million (over USD 7 million) contribution to protecting critical ecosystems. The company is also focused on achieving zero deforestation in its supply chain and implementing zero water discharge, zero waste to landfill, and zero food loss at its five key global facilities. Furthermore, Thai Union's inclusion in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2024 highlights its position as one of the world's top sustainable companies. The company was ranked in the Top 10% of S&P Global ESG Scores in the food industry, following an assessment of over 9,400 companies in the 2023 Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), with only 759 companies making it into the 2024 Yearbook. This recognition by CDP and S&P Global follows Thai Union's 10th consecutive listing on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) in 2023 and its third consecutive top ranking on the Seafood Stewardship Index for its contributions towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
