Thai Union celebrated Earth Day by contributing donations that included garments and protective suits, which were innovatively crafted from recycled plastic materials.

BANGKOK – On April 22, 2022, in observance of Earth Day, Thai Union reaffirmed its dedication to the preservation of marine environments through its Green Giving initiative. This project involved the distribution of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) crafted from nearly 500 kilograms of recycled PET bottles. These bottles were gathered from the company's employees at its Bangkok headquarters and its manufacturing sites. The items were then distributed to waste collectors across 10 local communities and to frontline medical personnel. The well-being of the oceans is fundamental to the operations of Thai Union, one of the leading seafood companies globally. Protecting marine ecosystems is a crucial aspect of its worldwide pledge towards "Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans." Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste find their way into the oceans, predominantly from urban areas, including plastic debris and microplastics. This pollution poses a significant threat to marine life, which is vital for Thai Union's operations. In response, the company launched the Green Giving initiative to motivate its employees to recycle plastic and support the conservation of ocean health, aiming to repurpose plastic waste that might otherwise pollute our waterways. Thiraphong Chansiri, CEO of Thai Union Group, emphasized the importance of the oceans to the company's success and its responsibility as a global seafood industry leader to promote the conservation of these vital resources, which also support the livelihoods of millions globally. For the Green Giving initiative, Thai Union collaborated with the UNDP and Trash Lucky, a start-up from Thailand that was a product of SPACE-F, Thailand's inaugural food tech incubator and accelerator program, co-founded by Thai Union. The project's objective was to transform plastic waste into wearable items and other practical goods for communities of local waste collectors. The initiative saw a remarkable response from the company's employees, with a collection of 2,300 kilograms of recyclable waste, including 500 kilograms of PET bottles. These were transformed into 300 sets of clothing, such as jackets, hats, aprons, and gloves, with the first batches already distributed to waste collectors in Bangkok. These individuals earn their livelihood by collecting and selling recyclable materials. Additionally, the other plastics gathered from Thai Union's facilities in Samut Sakhon were converted into 1,000 PPE suits for frontline workers combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
