Plastic packaging reductions introduced by ABP
Today, ABP unveiled its latest initiative to introduce eco-friendly packaging solutions for several of its customers across Europe. This innovative approach will cut the use of plastics in packaging its meat products by an impressive 70%. The new packaging design combines recyclable cardboard with a minimalistic, peelable plastic film, ensuring the product's shelf life remains unaffected. The eco-conscious packaging is initially rolling out with ABP’s Goodherdsmen organic meat range, with plans to expand to additional lines soon. The unveiling took place at the Anuga Food Fair in Cologne, marking a significant step forward in sustainable packaging at the world's largest food and beverage expo. John Purcell, the Managing Director of Goodherdsmen, ABP's Organic division, emphasized the company's comprehensive commitment to sustainability, touching on aspects such as energy and water usage, renewable energy adoption, and now, packaging innovations. He expressed enthusiasm about the launch of this packaging for the German market, with aspirations to broaden its application across more products in the near future. The new packaging not only boasts a 70% reduction in plastic use but also offers several other benefits. It is 10 grams lighter than its predecessor, utilizes card material from forests certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), and features a plastic film that can be easily separated for recycling. The packaging is also fully recyclable alongside paper and board. From a consumer perspective, the packaging's enhanced visual appeal and the inclusion of a euro hook hole for hanging in retail displays are notable improvements. This hanging feature promotes better air circulation in refrigerated displays, modernizes merchandising, and optimizes space utilization. Furthermore, ABP has taken a leadership role in Ireland by joining the Plastics Action Alliance. This initiative brings together nine leading companies from Ireland's agricultural processing and food sectors, aiming to enhance the sustainability of plastic packaging within their supply chains. The alliance represents a broad spectrum of the industry, including beef, poultry, pork, lamb, and produce sectors, showcasing a united front in the pursuit of more sustainable packaging solutions.
