Official statement by Silvercrest Foods
Press Release Wednesday, January 16, 2013 ABP FOOD GROUP ANNOUNCES IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW TESTING PROCEDURES, INCLUDING DNA ANALYSIS, FOR ALL MEAT PRODUCTS IN RESPONSE TO FSAI DISCOVERIES ABP is treating this situation with the utmost seriousness and extends its apologies for the concern this has understandably generated. The companies within the ABP Food Group have never intentionally purchased, handled, or distributed any products containing horse meat. We recognize the concern that has arisen following the Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s findings from DNA tests on frozen beef burgers. This situation is confined to frozen beef burgers produced by Silvercrest Foods and Dalepak Hambleton. Despite there being no risk to food safety, a comprehensive product recall has been initiated. Our companies procure meat exclusively from suppliers that are licensed and approved within the EU. The issues identified pertain solely to beef products sourced from suppliers on the Continent. A minimal amount of our meat is sourced from outside the UK & Ireland, and our fresh meat offerings are not implicated. The discovery of these test results has been shocking, particularly the finding of 29% horse DNA in one sample, for which we currently have no explanation. Investigations are now focused on beef products traced back to two suppliers. We have dispatched audit teams for surprise inspections at their facilities. Additionally, we are conducting our own DNA testing on numerous samples and anticipate the results shortly. Although rigorous safety inspections are standard for all our meat products, species-specific DNA testing has not been a routine practice within the industry. In light of recent events, we are instituting a comprehensive testing program that will include DNA verification. Should our investigations confirm contamination, we are prepared to reevaluate our relationships with the suppliers in question. Ensuring the integrity of our supply chain is paramount, and we are dedicated to regaining the trust of our consumers. The company will refrain from making further comments at this stage.
