Innovative Farmers of the Future Competition run by ABP at Balmoral Show 2016
Today, ABP Food Group has unveiled plans to host their pioneering Farmers of the Future contest once more at the upcoming Royal Ulster Agricultural Society Balmoral Show. The competition is open to enthusiastic young farmers aged 12 to 16 years, aiming to attract them to the beef farming sector and instruct them on superior cattle rearing techniques, thereby positioning agriculture as a viable lifelong profession. The contest winners will be awarded six 14-week-old calves to nurture until they reach market size, alongside unparalleled guidance and insights from both ABP and seasoned professionals in the field. The total prize package is valued at approximately £6,000. Young agricultural enthusiasts keen on participating in the Farmer of the Future contest are invited to submit a 200-word essay detailing why they should be chosen to receive the calves and support from ABP. Submissions are to be made via the website www.farmersofthefuture.today. A selection of finalists will be determined, with the victors being declared in July. Owen McGreevey from Dromore, Co. Down, and Caleb Haffrey from Donaghcloney, Co. Armagh, were the celebrated winners of the 2015 edition. Arthur Callaghan of ABP Northern Ireland commented on the initiative, stating, "This initiative is designed to equip young farmers with practical experience in establishing a high-quality beef production operation. Our team, together with various industry specialists, will offer comprehensive support to the winners throughout the program, incorporating the latest research and guidance through an on-farm mentorship scheme. We encourage any young individual passionate about beef farming to visit our website www.farmersofthefuture.today for additional information." ABP proudly serves as the platinum sponsor for this year's Balmoral show. The company operates two facilities in Northern Ireland, located in Lurgan and Newry, and provides employment for 491 individuals in the local area.
