ABP reveals Farmers of the Future competition winners
ABP Food Group unveiled the victors of its Farmers of the Future initiative during a ceremony at Banville House Hotel in Banbridge on October 4th. This program is designed to highlight beef farming as a viable career path, aiming to inspire and educate the youth about optimal cattle rearing techniques. It targeted young, aspiring farmers aged 12 to 16. The competition culminated in an evening where six finalists were evaluated by a panel of judges in a format reminiscent of Dragon’s Den, with an elimination round. The standout participants were John Fisher from Ballymartin, Co Down, and Connor Higgins from Katesbridge, Co. Down. Their comprehensive knowledge on market demands and profitability, alongside their understanding of animal health and welfare, the critical role of vaccination in calf rearing, and nutritional management for calves transitioning to finishers, earned them the top spots. George Mullan, the General Manager of ABP NI, commented during the event, “ABP Food Group is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of beef farming among the younger generation. This contest is a step towards enhancing this knowledge and positioning agriculture and beef farming as appealing career choices for the future.” The winners were each awarded 6 calves, with ABP committing full support in the development of these calves following the Blade Farming System until they are sent to the slaughterhouse. The awards are valued at approximately £6,000 for each recipient.
