ABP invites more entries for the Angus Youth Challenge

ABP is inviting new participants to join the ABP Angus Youth Challenge, a competition designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of teenagers about the agri-food sector from its inception to the final product, in an engaging and competitive manner. George Mullan, the Managing Director of ABP in Northern Ireland, stated, “The ABP Angus Youth Challenge aims to engage young individuals who are passionate about agri-food production at a crucial point in their educational journey. The zeal displayed by current participants is remarkable. We are on the lookout for 14 to 16-year-olds eager to exhibit their understanding and keen interest in agri-food production by representing their school, club, or community with distinction.” Participants are required to submit a brief video, followed by an interview for shortlisting, to progress to the semi-final stage. Semi-finalists will then partake in a national competition in March 2019, judged by an independent panel comprising industry specialists and media representatives. Finalist teams will receive five Aberdeen Angus calves each at a prestigious award ceremony at the 2019 Balmoral Show. They will rear these calves to maturity and enjoy the profits from their sale to ABP after an 18-month program with the company. Additionally, the top-performing school, club, or group will receive a cash prize of £1,000. The challenge is a collaborative effort with the Northern Irish Angus Producer Group. Charles Smith, the General Manager of the group, highlighted, “Advancing to the final stage of the ABP Angus Youth Challenge offers opportunities for travel, gaining insights from a leading, award-winning beef processor, accumulating valuable experience for future careers, and working on projects that enhance ABP’s quality beef supply chain.” The 2018 finalists included Belfast Royal Academy, Enniskillen Royal Grammar, Rainey Endowed Magherafelt, and St Louis Grammar Ballymena. Interested individuals do not need to have a farming background to participate. The deadline for entries is 30th November 2018, at noon.
