ABP commits to Origin Green

ABP, along with eight other Irish companies, is participating in the initial phase of the Origin Green program. This group includes notable entities such as the Kerry Group, Glanbia (Dairy Ingredients Ireland), Marine Harvest, Country Crest, Dawn Farm Foods, Flahavans, Irish Distillers, and Errigal Seafood. Origin Green is a proactive, voluntary initiative aimed at showcasing the dedication of Irish food and beverage producers to sustainable practices. Ireland is recognized globally for its premium, naturally sourced food, beverages, and ingredients. Notably, the country's dairy sector boasts the lowest carbon footprint in Europe. Origin Green represents a significant step forward, allowing the industry to substantiate its sustainability claims with tangible evidence, meeting the demands of global retailers and foodservice providers. At the core of Origin Green is a sustainability charter, which obliges participants to address sustainability challenges head-on. This includes efforts to reduce energy use, cut carbon emissions, and mitigate environmental impact, thereby enhancing both efficiency and competitiveness within the industry. Since its inception in 2011 by Bord Bia, the program has made notable strides, including the introduction of carbon footprint monitoring across all Bord Bia Quality Assured Beef farms—a pioneering initiative on a national scale aimed at measuring and reducing carbon footprints. The program is expanding to encompass a wide range of primary production sectors, with plans to incorporate water use and biodiversity metrics into its framework. Participation in Origin Green requires companies to commit to a detailed, multi-year action plan outlining specific sustainability targets. Companies must then report their progress annually, ensuring accountability and transparency.
