ABP champions farm safety at BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2018

The 2018 edition of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is scheduled to be held at the RDS in Dublin from January 10th to January 13th. The ABP Food Group will be present with a booth to inform participants about the importance of safety on the farm, situated at location W1. To interact with participants and raise awareness, the ABP team plans to showcase farm safety challenges with help from Agri Kids, the leading educational platform on farm safety for children in Ireland. Additionally, ABP will host hands-on farm safety workshops led by Jim Dockery and his team from Farm Relief Services. Through interactive activities and live demonstrations, ABP is committed to promoting farm safety and emphasizing the importance of educating all individuals who work on farms, especially the youth. Farm safety remains a critical issue in Ireland, with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) reporting 24 fatalities in farming incidents last year, 14 of which involved individuals aged 65 and older. Tractor and farm vehicle accidents, including those involving quadbikes frequently used by farmers of all ages, accounted for 14 of these deaths. Martin Kane, Managing Director of ABP Ireland, commented, “With this sponsorship, our goal at ABP Food Group is to heighten awareness, particularly among the youth, about the potential hazards present on farms and to explore solutions to mitigate these risks. The persistent concern of farm safety in Ireland necessitates more focused attention, as underscored by the recent HSA statistics on farming fatalities. We are hopeful that our participation in the exhibition will enhance awareness about the necessary precautions for farm safety.” Now in its 54th year, the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition stands as one of the most significant and enduring STEM events globally. The 2018 theme, “it starts here,” aims to underscore and celebrate the exhibition's role in sparking a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
