ABP Angus Youth Challenge semi-final features innovative ideas from NI teens
Highlighting the nutritional benefits of beef, emphasizing the significance of grass-fed beef production, and showcasing a Northern Irish Angus beef brand were among the strategies employed by participants in the ABP Youth Challenge to captivate the independent judging panel during the semi-final round at CAFRE Loughry College, Cookstown. Teams comprising teenagers aged 14 to 16 from across the province showcased their innovative ideas, vying for a spot in the final and the opportunity to win Aberdeen Angus calves to nurture until maturity. Participants hailed from various counties, including teams from Belfast Royal Academy and Royal Belfast Academic Institute in Co. Antrim; St Louis Grammar Ballymena and Ballyclare Secondary School; St Patrick’s High School in Co. Armagh, alongside Dromore High School in Co. Down; Rainey Endowed School in Co. Londonderry; Enniskillen Royal Grammar in Co. Fermanagh; Holy Trinity College in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone; and Collone Young Farmers Club in Co. Armagh. George Mullan, Managing Director of ABP in Northern Ireland, praised the teams for their dedication, highlighting the ABP Angus Youth Challenge as a cornerstone for nurturing future agricultural and food production talent in Northern Ireland through the development of young skills. He expressed optimism for the future, citing the showcased talent as a promising indicator of success. Judge Michael Bell, Executive Director of NIFDA, commended the semi-finalists' enthusiasm and noted the educational impact of their projects on beef knowledge. He mentioned that the integration of technology in farming has inspired many female students, with Minette Batters, the NFU President, serving as a significant inspiration. After Easter, three finalist teams will be selected and awarded five Aberdeen Angus x calves at a prominent event during the 150th Balmoral Show in May. These teams will then raise their calves to sale to ABP as part of an 18-month educational program that provides a comprehensive view of beef production from inception to consumption. Additionally, they will gain financially from the sale proceeds of the calves to ABP, with one team also securing a £1,000 cash prize for their school or club. The ABP Angus Youth Challenge is a collaborative effort with the Northern Irish Angus Producers Group, judged by industry experts from leading farming and agri-food organizations.
