2022 General Assembly: Action program shows early success

After 2021 was already a financially challenging year for the German meat industry, experts do not foresee any immediate improvements for the sector. On the contrary, the number of animals being slaughtered continues to decline, especially in the pork market. At the same time, costs are relentlessly increasing. "The African Swine Fever, the export ban to China, the Russian offensive war, and the significantly higher costs for energy, personnel, and logistics are severely impacting the competitiveness of German pork," reported Michael Schulze Kalthoff, who oversees the pork business on the board of Westfleisch. "Moreover, the surplus supply is causing immense price pressure and too low pork prices. The economic conditions for producers are disastrous, and the current circumstances offer no short-term relief." Therefore, it is crucial for the cooperative to take all necessary steps to enhance and expand its market position.
