2022 Exhibition of ABP Angus Youth in Northern Ireland

The ABP Angus Youth NI Exhibition Empowers Future Agrifood Leaders Recently, the Logan Hall at Balmoral Park was filled with the passionate voices of teenagers discussing their concerns and ideas about beef farming and the agrifood industry in Northern Ireland. Eighty young individuals from various schools across the region gathered for the 2022 ABP Angus Youth Challenge Exhibition, competing for a spot in the prestigious ABP Angus Youth finalist program. Their challenge was to present their innovative ideas for the sustainable production of Angus beef, from the farm all the way to the consumer, to a panel of 20 judges from the agricultural and educational fields. The exhibition showcased a wealth of creativity, innovation, and practical solutions to current challenges in the industry. George Mullan, the Managing Director of ABP in Northern Ireland, praised the 24 participating teams for their contributions, highlighting the exhibition as a platform for the younger generation to express their ideas and engage with key players in the agrifood sector. The teams advancing to the next round stand to gain significantly, with each winning team receiving five Aberdeen Angus cross calves to rear over a year as part of a skills development program. This initiative not only offers them a financial reward upon the sale of the cattle to ABP but also includes a £1,000 cash prize for the school of the overall winning team. Additionally, finalists will undertake research assignments focused on sustainability with guidance from a CAFRE mentor, receive professional skills training, and participate in an international study tour. The ABP Angus Youth Challenge, a collaborative effort between ABP and the Certified Irish Angus Producer Group, aims to educate and inspire young people about the realities of local farming and beef production. Charles Smith, the General Manager, commended the participants for their deep understanding of Angus beef production and their enthusiasm for Northern Ireland's rich agricultural and food heritage. He emphasized the competition's role in correcting misconceptions spread through social media and in equipping young people with the necessary skills for a successful career in the sector. The event also celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2021, with Cookstown High School and Newtownhamilton High School being named joint overall winners for their outstanding contributions during their time in the ABP Angus Youth Challenge. Special individual awards were presented to students from Cookstown High School and Dalriada School, recognizing their exceptional performances.
