Students from Gorey Community School Triumph in Certified Irish Angus Competition with Innovative Research on Sustainability At a distinguished awards ceremony held in Croke Park, four talented students from Gorey Community School were celebrated as the victors of the 2022 Certified Irish Angus School’s Competition, an initiative supported by ABP. The team, comprising Eoin Kelly, Caoimhe Crean, Caoimhe Horan, and Pádraig Kinsella, captivated the judges with their insightful exploration into the environmental, economic, and ethical advantages of the Certified Irish Angus breed, alongside their creation of a recipe booklet aimed at educating their community about this sustainable breed. The competition, now in its eighth year, saw the students undertake the challenge of rearing five Irish Angus calves, with the goal of promoting the Certified Irish Angus Beef brand and highlighting the meticulous care involved in producing high-quality beef. Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, praised the initiative during the event's opening, highlighting its role in connecting producers with consumers and underscoring the exceptional quality of livestock produced by Ireland's farmers. Special guest and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Rachael Blackmore shared her personal journey, emphasizing the impact of her farming background on her career and the values instilled in her from a young age. Charles Smith, General Manager of the Irish Angus Producer Group, expressed his delight at hosting the event in person at Croke Park, commending the maturity and agricultural knowledge displayed by the participating students. He particularly praised the winning team from Gorey Community School for their comprehensive understanding and respect for farming, regardless of their individual backgrounds. This year's Certified Irish Angus Schools Competition not only celebrated the achievements of young scholars but also reinforced the importance of sustainable farming practices and the role of the next generation in the future of agriculture.
