Update from Tyson Foods CEO on COVID-19 Mitigation Efforts
On April 6, 2020, Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN), based in Springdale, Arkansas, released a statement from its CEO, Noel White, regarding the company's response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States and its effect on the company's operations. White stated that the company is making every effort to safeguard its employees during this unpredictable situation, while also maintaining its crucial role in feeding the nation. The company has implemented measures such as taking the temperature of all employees at every location before they enter the premises. They are primarily using temporal thermometers, but are starting to use infrared temperature scanners at some locations. The company has also increased the frequency and intensity of cleaning and sanitizing at their facilities, particularly in areas like breakrooms and locker rooms. This sometimes necessitates halting production for a day. Tyson Foods is also working with federal agencies to stress the importance of personal protective equipment for their employees as they continue to operate. They are striving to secure a sufficient supply of protective face masks for their production workers and have put in place temporary protective covering protocols, while maintaining food safety. The company is also looking into and implementing further measures to encourage social distancing within their plants. This includes installing barriers between workstations or increasing the distance between workers on the production floor, which may slow down production lines. They are also creating more space in non-production areas, such as setting up tents for outdoor break rooms at some locations. The company's meat and poultry plants are experiencing varying degrees of production impact due to the implementation of additional safety measures for workers and worker absenteeism. For instance, they have temporarily halted operations at their pork plant in Columbus Junction, Iowa, this week due to over two dozen COVID-19 cases among the facility's employees. To minimize the impact on overall production, they are redirecting the livestock supply originally intended for Columbus Junction to other pork plants in the area. Despite the challenges, Tyson Foods remains dedicated to protecting its employees while continuing to meet the demands of its customers and consumers across the country.
