Tyson Poultry Inc Settles Federal Case Related to 2014 Incident

Springfield, MO – September 27, 2017 – Tyson Poultry, Inc. has acknowledged its role in a 2014 environmental mishap at its Monett, Missouri, establishment. The company swiftly took remedial measures, settled a civil case with the state of Missouri in 2015, and has now addressed federal concerns. The following statement was released by company officials regarding the federal resolution: STATEMENT In May 2014, our company unfortunately made an error that led to the unintentional discharge of an animal feed component into the City of Monett’s wastewater treatment system. This discharge interfered with the treatment system and caused a fish kill in a nearby stream. We sincerely regret the error that occurred and have implemented corrective measures to ensure it does not recur. We are dedicated to improving all aspects of our business, particularly in relation to environmental protection. Following the incident, we have provided training to all environmental managers in our poultry operations based on the lessons learned and have enhanced our environmental policies and procedures to avoid similar errors in the future. In 2015, we settled with the State of Missouri over the unintentional discharge and subsequently paid a civil penalty, financed a bridge replacement in Monett, and made a donation to the James River Basin Partnership. Today, we addressed federal concerns about the incident by accepting responsibility for two misdemeanor violations of the Clean Water Act. Our company will pay a $2 million fine to the federal government and make a $500,000 community service payment, with half going to the City of Monett and half to Missouri environmental organizations. We will also finance third-party environmental audits of our feed mills and wastewater treatment plants. Tyson Poultry, Inc. is a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, Inc.
