The Union City, Tennessee poultry plant of Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN) is set to receive an $84 million investment, which is expected to generate over 300 new jobs. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-2019\. Doug Ramsey, group president of poultry, stated that the increasing demand for protein, particularly chicken, has led to the company investing in projects that enhance their strengths, broaden their capabilities, and boost their capacity. He added that such expansions enable them to grow and better serve their customers. The upcoming project, which commences this fall, will enhance the plant's existing harvest area, introduce additional processing lines, and upgrade the hatchery, feed mill, and transportation operations. The plant facility will also be expanded by approximately 25,000 square feet. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam expressed his pleasure at Tyson's decision to expand in Union City, noting that the company has been a vital part of Obion County for two decades. He thanked Tyson for its ongoing commitment to West Tennessee and for contributing to Tennessee's goal of becoming the top location in the Southeast for high-quality jobs. To accommodate the facility's increased capacity, Tyson Foods anticipates the construction of nearly 200 additional broiler chicken houses in northwestern Tennessee within the next two years. Independent farmers interested in growing for Tyson Foods are invited to visit the Grow With Tyson website for more information. Ramsey expressed his gratitude to the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, and the Northwest Tennessee Economic Development Council for their support and assistance with the project. The Union City plant, which was established by Tyson Foods in 1997, produces partially fried chicken products for food service. The facility employs over 1,000 people and paid nearly $32 million in wages during the 2016 fiscal year. Tyson Foods also operates facilities in Goodlettsville, Newbern, and Shelbyville, Tennessee, employing approximately 5,000 people in the state with an annual payroll exceeding $181 million.
