On September 8, 2015, in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, Tyson Foods, Inc. made a generous contribution of a truckload of chicken to the Southern Branch of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ). This donation was aimed at combating hunger in the Atlantic City region. The Southern Branch of CFBNJ, which caters to Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties, will be responsible for distributing the donated chicken to various feeding programs, including soup kitchens. Evelyn Benton, the executive director of CFBNJ’s Southern Branch, expressed her gratitude for the continued support from Tyson Foods and the local American Culinary Federation’s Chefs Association over the past twenty years. She emphasized that this donation would provide a healthy source of protein to thousands of needy New Jersey residents in the upcoming fall season. For four decades, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey has been dedicated to serving the food-insecure population of New Jersey. The Southern Branch of CFBNJ, established in 1987, collaborates with the main office in Hillside to feed individuals in 17 counties. Each year, a CFBNJ partner feeds someone in need 4.7 million times. After the donation, David Goldstein, the president of the Professional Chefs Association of South Jersey, a chapter of the American Culinary Federation, conducted a cooking demonstration using the donated chicken and other items from the FoodBank’s pantry. Health experts agree that meat and poultry are nutrient-rich foods, beneficial for those who require more protein, such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone under severe stress, disease, or disability. Food banks across the country report that meat is the most requested but least available food. Since 2000, Tyson Foods has donated over 100 million pounds of protein in the United States. Tyson Foods’ “KNOW Hunger” campaign aims to raise awareness and mobilize efforts to eradicate hunger in America. The company collaborates with Feeding America, Share Our Strength, and Lift Up America to raise awareness and feed the hungry nationwide. Earlier this month, Tyson Foods reaffirmed its commitment to hunger relief by pledging $50 million in cash and in-kind donations over the next five years, with a particular emphasis on innovative local initiatives. Andy Cohen, the manager of foodservice sales for Tyson Foods, noted that last year, the Southern Branch of CFBNJ distributed a record 8.6 million pounds of groceries. He expressed hope that this donation would not only meet immediate needs but also raise awareness about food insecurity.
