Tyson Foods Outlines Strategy for Continued Growth
The key points from the Investor Day message underscore the company's value-added and global growth strategy NEW YORK CITY – June 20, 2019 – Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) is successfully adapting to evolving consumer demands and is well-placed for enduring, sustainable growth, company representatives informed investors and analysts today at Tyson Foods’ Investor Day at the New York Stock Exchange. Chairman John Tyson, President and CEO Noel White, and other senior management team members spoke at the event, highlighting Tyson’s diverse portfolio, implementation of its long-term growth plan, initiatives to enhance its value-added product range, ongoing innovation in food and sustainability, and entry into new international markets. “We are well-positioned for enduring growth as we understand consumers and can cater to their needs through a wide range of diverse products,” White stated. “Looking forward, prepared foods and value-added chicken are projected to be the most profitable segments and international is where we anticipate significant growth.” John Tyson expressed enthusiasm about the company's direction and the diversity of its products, businesses, people, and locations. “We aim to provide high-quality, safe, sustainable, and affordable food, while supporting our communities, customers, shareholders, and our employees.” Over the past decade, Tyson Foods has provided a total shareholder return of 695 percent, compared to a 328 percent return of the S&P 500 during the same period. “Our balanced strategy of activating a variety of growth models allows us to invest, build, purchase, and collaborate – and it’s proving successful,” stated Chief Financial Officer Stewart Glendinning. Key points shared at the event include: Tyson Foods’ Prepared Foods division has evolved into a large, profitable growth driver. The segment accounted for 3 percent of company profits five years ago and now contributes 30 percent. Through recent global acquisitions, Tyson Foods is poised to capitalize on increasing worldwide protein demand. Over the next five years, it is projected that nearly 98 percent of protein consumption growth will occur outside the U.S., with approximately 70 percent of that growth expected in Asia. A global decrease in pork supply due to the impact of African Swine Fever on the Chinese pig population could provide significant benefits to Tyson Foods’ poultry, pork, and beef divisions, but could also escalate raw material costs for the company’s prepared foods division. Beef has seen demand growth resulting in higher beef margins. This trend is anticipated to continue due to factors such as rising global middle-class income, increases in live cattle supplies, and the continued growth of the company’s case-ready, value-added business. Tyson Foods’ poultry division continues to expand its range of value-added products through acquisition and innovation in the retail and foodservice channels. Examples in retail include the recent acquisition of the Smart Chicken® brand that offers premium, organic, air-chilled chicken and plans to launch new Tyson® Air Fried chicken this fall. Demand growth for alternative proteins is being driven by individuals who enjoy eating meat but are also open to a diet that includes plant-based proteins. Company leaders believe this growth is “incremental and meaningful in potential size” and recently introduced the company’s first plant-based and blended products.
