Tyson Foods Launches Coalition for Sustainable Protein Advancement
The Coalition for Global Protein, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable protein for the future, has been established by Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN), as announced on January 21, 2020, in Davos, Switzerland. To commemorate the Coalition's inauguration, Tyson Foods is assembling leaders from the worldwide protein industry, including representatives from academia, NGOs, and financial institutions, at the 50th World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. The objective is to bring together stakeholders from the food and agriculture sector to discover and implement innovative solutions for sustainably feeding the increasing global population. The discussion will be led by Dr. Lawrence Haddad, the executive director of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition. Dr. Haddad emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to make the production of high-protein foods more sustainable. He highlighted the critical role of these foods, particularly those from animal sources, in the healthy growth of young children, especially those with poor quality diets. He stressed the need for their production to respect planetary environmental boundaries and expressed optimism about the Coalition's potential contribution to these efforts. Noel White, CEO of Tyson Foods, stated that as one of the world's leading food companies, they aim to ensure the responsible production of affordable, nutritious food for future generations. He underscored the need for collective commitment and immediate action to make a significant impact on the future of sustainable food production. Tyson Foods has a strong commitment to sustainability throughout the food ecosystem, which is integral to its core values. The company has previously pledged to improve land stewardship practices on two million acres of corn, set Science-Based greenhouse gas reduction targets in partnership with the World Resources Institute, committed to reducing water use intensity by 12% by 2020, and is collaborating with PROFOREST to identify deforestation risks across its global supply chain. John R. Tyson, Tyson Foods' chief sustainability officer, emphasized the company's focus on bringing together influential stakeholders in the food sector to build a sustainable and equitable future of protein across global communities. The Coalition aims to enhance understanding of the challenges associated with feeding a growing population with diverse and sustainable protein options, identify innovative solutions, and implement these solutions through pilot programs. The Coalition may focus on reducing food loss and waste, increasing access to protein, and protecting ecosystems. The Coalition's initial work will involve stakeholders aligning on focus areas, with public reporting on commitments and progress expected in 2020. About Tyson Foods Tyson Foods, Inc.
