Tyson Foods Introduces Global Forest Protection Standard

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – November 12, 2020 – Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) has today unveiled a Forest Protection Standard, a strategy aimed at mitigating the risk of deforestation within its global supply chain, which includes four key commodities – cattle and beef, soy, palm oil, and pulp, paper and packaging. Earlier in the year, Tyson Foods collaborated with Proforest to carry out a deforestation risk evaluation. The findings revealed that approximately 94 percent of the company’s land footprint is at minimal to no risk of being linked to deforestation. The Forest Protection Standard was established to proactively tackle the remaining six percent identified as at risk, ensuring the company continues to focus on reducing deforestation risk across its global supply chain. “As a leading global food company and a renowned leader in protein, we have a significant role in preserving forests and other natural ecosystems,” stated Dean Banks, Tyson Foods president and CEO. “We are expressing our commitment to making protein more sustainable and are eager to collaborate with our supply chain partners, customers and other stakeholders to contribute to this crucial issue.” In order to back the Forest Protection Standard, specific Commodity Action Plans are being formulated to detail the necessary work in each commodity sector to support deforestation-free sourcing. The company’s annual Sustainability Report will provide updates on the progress made towards achieving the goals of the Forest Protection Standard. Tyson Foods is a participant in the United Nations Global Compact and endorses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) and its 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The Forest Protection Standard of Tyson Foods aligns with three SDGs including Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production; Goal 13 - Climate Action; and Goal 15 - Life on Land.
