In an effort to support its frontline workers during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) has announced that it will double bonuses, enhance short-term disability coverage, and introduce further health screening procedures. The company has pledged $120 million in "appreciation bonuses" for its 116,000 U.S. frontline employees and truck drivers, a significant increase from the $60 million declared in early April. The first $500 bonus payment will be advanced to early May, with the second $500 bonus scheduled for July. Workers unable to attend work due to sickness or childcare responsibilities will still be eligible for the bonus, although attendance will be a factor in determining eligibility. Tyson Foods is also boosting short-term disability coverage to 90% of regular pay until June 30, 2020, for employees who are unable to work due to illness, as a further incentive for sick employees to stay home. The company will also implement additional health screening measures, including screening workers for symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath, appointing monitors at each facility to enforce social distancing, and mandating the use of company-provided surgical-style face masks. Mary Oleksiuk, executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Tyson Foods, stated that the company's decision to implement these changes reflects their commitment to continually find new ways to support their employees during this crisis. She emphasized that the safety and well-being of their employees is their top priority as they continue to play a crucial role in feeding the nation. Tyson Foods had previously eliminated the waiting period for short-term disability, ensuring immediate payment for workers who fall ill with COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms. The company has also waived co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles for doctor visits for COVID-19 testing, eliminated pre-approval or preauthorization steps, waived co-pays for telemedicine through Doctor On Demand, and relaxed refill limits for 30-day prescriptions of maintenance medication. Since forming a coronavirus task force in January, Tyson Foods has implemented numerous measures to protect its workers, including taking worker temperatures, installing over 150 infrared walkthrough temperature scanners in its facilities, procuring face coverings before CDC recommendations, conducting additional deep cleaning and sanitizing in company facilities, implementing social distancing measures, and relaxing its attendance policy to encourage sick workers to stay home.
