Tyson Foods Gives $168,000 and Protein to Middle Georgia Community Food Bank
On March 13, 2018, in Macon, Georgia, Tyson Foods declared its intention to assist the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank in setting up a mobile pantry. This assistance will come in the form of a $168,414 grant, which will be used to buy a 26-foot refrigerated truck. Additionally, Tyson Foods has donated a truckload of protein, weighing in at 35,000 pounds. David Griffin, the executive director of the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, expressed his gratitude for Tyson Foods' substantial contribution to their mission of feeding those in need. He emphasized that the food bank's impact on the community, including children and veterans, would not be possible without the support of compassionate partners like Tyson Foods. The mobile pantry's objective is to provide food to families and seniors in the rural areas served by the food bank. The new refrigerated truck will enable the food bank to extend its reach to more households facing food insecurity by broadening its distribution area. It will also facilitate an increase in retail and wholesale food donation pickups. In 2016, the food bank delivered 23,894 boxes of food to rural families across its service area. The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank combats food insecurity in a 24-county service area by gathering food from donors and wholesale partners and distributing it through a network of over 230 partner agencies. Debra Vernon, senior director of corporate social responsibility at Tyson Foods, stated that their investment in the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank signifies more than just a new truck. She noted that each journey the mobile food pantry undertakes will enable an additional 30 families and 30 seniors to have meals they might not have had otherwise. Tyson Foods operates five facilities in Georgia and employs over 4,000 people in the state. The company also buys grain, diesel, and other utilities in Georgia, and estimates its annual economic impact in the state to be over $361 million. About Tyson Foods: Tyson Foods, Inc.
