# Tyson Foods Focuses on Community Healthcare Education and Access

Over $600,000 Granted to Six Institutions Across Four States Springdale, Ark. – May 29, 2018 – Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN) continues its mission to redefine the potential of good food and its dedication to aiding the communities it serves. Today, the company declared grants exceeding $600,000 to six community healthcare providers across four states. Tyson Foods' community support initiatives include a $200,000 donation to the University of Arkansas Foundation Fund, Inc., specifically for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Northwest Regional Campus (UAMS) in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The funds aim to enhance community health literacy, foster healthcare professional cultural competency, and enable the Hispanic/Latino and Marshallese/Pacific Islander communities to better navigate healthcare systems. The resources to be developed encompass educational training videos, cultural competency training events, community health worker training, and diabetes self-management education. Pearl McElfish, Ph.D., M.B.A., associate vice chancellor of UAMS Northwest Regional Campus and director of the UAMS Office of Community Health and Research, stated, “We are honored to contribute to Tyson Foods’ initiatives to tackle community health issues. Our research indicates that culturally sensitive approaches yield better health outcomes, and Tyson Foods adopting this approach will benefit the entire community in numerous ways.” Tyson Foods also granted a total of $305,000 to Kearny County Hospital in Holcomb, Kansas, Midtown Health Center in Madison, Nebraska, Community Clinic in Springdale, Arkansas, and Mercy Health in Rogers, Arkansas. These grants will finance a community health liaison who will explore opportunities to better link Tyson Foods team members and the communities with healthcare professionals, health education classes, and health information translation. Eric Pianalto, president of Mercy Hospital, expressed gratitude for Tyson Foods’ generosity and trust in Mercy to foster this innovative partnership to enhance the health and well-being of Tyson team members. Logansport Memorial Hospital and Four County Counseling Center in Logansport, Indiana, received $100,000 for substance abuse orientation and treatment, mobile health screenings, and community inventory research to identify gaps in health services.
