# Tyson Foods Expands Emporia Facility with New Production Line and Job Opportunities

On December 29, 2014, in Emporia, Kansas, Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) completed an expansion of its prepared foods facility. The project, which cost around $3 million, added a new production line designed to cater to a nationwide foodservice client, resulting in the creation of approximately 16 new jobs. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback expressed his appreciation for Tyson Foods' investment, highlighting the job creation and the reinforcement of Kansas' crucial role in the nation's food supply. He also congratulated Tyson on the successful expansion of their business. The expansion involved the construction of a new room to accommodate the line, alterations to the existing refrigeration system, and the installation of new equipment. The Emporia facility is a specialty meat plant for Tyson Foods, producing value-added raw cuts of beef, pork, and chicken for both food service and retail, under both branded and private labels. The Kansas Department of Commerce supported Tyson Foods in their expansion efforts by offering tax credits for new capital investment and training credits to aid in workforce development and retention. Mike Fiehler, the complex manager, expressed his satisfaction with the ability to meet customer demands through the expansion. He also acknowledged the Kansas Department of Commerce for their assistance in making the project a reality. The Emporia plant was originally purchased from Armour & Co. by IBP, inc., which was later acquired by Tyson Foods in 2001\. After significant renovations, the plant began operations in May 1969\. It was transformed into a specialty meats facility in 2008 and currently employs around 950 people. The payroll for the fiscal year 2013, the most recent full year data available, exceeded $31.5 million.
