The acquisition of Tecumseh Poultry LLC by Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) has positioned the company as a leading producer of organic branded chicken in the nation. This acquisition, announced on June 4, 2018, includes the air-chilled Smart Chicken® brand. The specifics of the deal remain undisclosed. Established in 1998, Tecumseh Poultry specializes in the production of air-chilled, fresh chicken, deli-style chicken, and a variety of chicken sausages. The air-chilling process, which uses cold air to cool chicken during processing, is a departure from the water-chilling method commonly used in the U.S. chicken industry. Both methods are overseen by USDA inspectors and are deemed safe. Eric Schwartz, Tyson Foods' chief marketing officer of Poultry, stated that the growing consumer demand for fresh, organic food options makes the Smart Chicken brand a strategic acquisition for Tyson Foods. Nielsen’s Perishables data indicates that organic fresh chicken sales volume increased by 8.6 percent from 2016 to 2017, a growth rate four times that of conventional poultry. Tecumseh Poultry’s processing capabilities and focus on quality have positioned the Smart Chicken brand as a leader in the rapidly growing U.S. fresh chicken category. Tecumseh Poultry operates two plants in Tecumseh and Waverly, Nebraska, along with live operations. Tyson Foods intends to run Tecumseh Poultry as a separate, wholly owned subsidiary and plans to retain its approximately 600 team members, including operations staff, sales teams, and management. Kevin Siebert, president of Tecumseh, expressed pride in the company's ability to produce high-quality, fresh chicken and welcomed the resources Tyson Foods brings to the Smart Chicken brand and other product lines. Doug Ramsey, group president of Poultry for Tyson Foods, praised Tecumseh as a well-run company with a solid customer base and expressed excitement for its continued growth. Tyson Foods also produces organic products under its NatureRaised Farms® and Aidells® brands. D.A. Davidson & Co. acted as the exclusive financial advisor to Tecumseh Poultry in the transaction.
