On May 27, 2015, in New Orleans, LA, Second Harvest Food Bank was thrilled to accept a large donation of chicken from Tyson Foods, Inc. The announcement was made at a special event at the New Orleans Mission, with Tyson Foods and volunteers from The Millennial Train Project revealing that they had chosen The New Orleans Mission and Second Harvest Food Bank as the recipients of nearly 40,000 pounds of chicken. Louisiana has a high rate of food insecurity, with one in six households at risk of hunger. The state is second in the nation for food hardship. The New Orleans Mission, a partner agency of Second Harvest Food Bank, is actively combating hunger among the homeless population. They will receive nearly 2,000 pounds of chicken for their soup kitchen. Natalie Jayroe, President and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the timely donation. She noted that with children out of school for the summer, families often struggle to stretch their grocery budgets. The donation from Tyson will help provide nutritious protein for children. Tyson Foods has a history of generosity, having donated nearly more than 98 million pounds of protein since 2000\. Tyson Foods’ Chef Matt Boring C.E.C. expressed hope that the donation would not only meet immediate needs but also raise awareness about hunger in communities. While in New Orleans, volunteers from The Millennial Train Project will visit the New Orleans Mission to learn more about hunger in the city and help unload the donation. The group is on a ten-day journey from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. Second Harvest Food Bank provides 22.5 million meals to 474 partners and programs across 23 South Louisiana parishes. They also connect clients to federal programs like SNAP through their benefits helpline. For more information about Tyson Foods' efforts to combat hunger, visit www.tysonhungerrelief.com.
