In November 2022, Thai Union embarked on a pioneering initiative by hiring the first consultant to conduct an on-board assessment of crew welfare and working conditions on longline fishing vessels. This initiative, which took place in May of the same year, marked a significant addition to the company's existing efforts to audit conditions within its fleet, which have been ongoing since 2018\. This was the first time such an at-sea evaluation was carried out, setting a new precedent in the industry. Thai Union has shown a strong commitment to enhancing transparency in fishing operations. The consultant, during a 34-day mission, evaluated 19 longline vessels, providing a unique insight into the lives of those working at sea. The assessment was conducted on a Malaysian flagged carrier vessel in the Indian Ocean, as part of the Indian Ocean Longline Fishery Improvement Project, managed by an independent fisheries and aquatic resourcing firm. The primary goal of this assessment was to determine whether such at-sea evaluations could complement existing satellite and electronic monitoring systems, as well as in-port inspections, thereby enriching the Fisher Work and Welfare Program (FWW) compliance assessment. The FWW Program is a global initiative applying to all fishing vessels supplying seafood to Thai Union. The consultant's experience highlighted the significant impact of the at-sea assessment program on improving fishers' health, safety, and living conditions. It underscored the potential of such programs to empower fishers, giving them a voice and ensuring their rights are protected. However, conducting these assessments is not without risks, as fishery observers can face harassment, intimidation, or even death. Thai Union proceeded with caution, partnering with MRAG, a company experienced in deploying observers and assessors on fishing vessels, to ensure the safety and success of the project. The insights gained from this project are invaluable, offering a new perspective on the benefits of at-sea assessments compared to traditional in-port audits. Thai Union plans to incorporate these learnings into their Fisher Work and Welfare program and develop protocols for future at-sea assessments, aiming to drive continuous improvement in the fishing sector. Thai Union's commitment to transparency and sustainable practices in the seafood industry is evident in its efforts to strengthen supplier relationships, demonstrate accountability, and support supplier improvement journeys. The company, a global seafood leader, continues to innovate and lead in sustainability, as recognized by its inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices and the FTSE4Good Emerging Index.
