BANGKOK – On May 2, 2021, in observance of World Tuna Day, Thai Union Group reiterated its commitment to sourcing 100 percent of its tuna sustainably for its branded products, aligning with its broader dedication to ocean sustainability. The company has made significant strides towards this goal, surpassing its initial target by sourcing 90 percent of its tuna from fisheries that are either certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or engaged in a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP), against a target of 75 percent by 2020\. Dr. Darian McBain, Thai Union's Group Director of Sustainability, emphasized the company's role in leading the industry towards more sustainable practices. "Launching our Tuna Commitment in 2016 was a step towards reshaping the global seafood industry's approach to tuna sourcing. We're proud of the progress we've made in promoting sustainable seafood consumption and contributing to the fight against climate change," McBain stated. Further insights into the company's sustainability efforts and Tuna Commitment will be disclosed in its upcoming annual Sustainability Report. Thai Union is also advancing its operations to ensure the longevity of tuna populations, thereby securing the future availability of nutritious seafood products under its leading brands such as Chicken of the Sea, John West, Petit Navire, and others, including prominent Thai brands like SEALECT. In a move towards greater supply chain transparency, Thai Union announced an initiative earlier this year in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy. This initiative involves implementing electronic monitoring systems across its partner vessels to enhance oversight and ensure ethical practices. The company is also dedicated to improving labor conditions within the fishing industry, conducting annual audits of its supply chain vessels in accordance with its Vessel Code of Conduct established in 2017\. Compliance with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation's (ISSF) conservation measures is another area where Thai Union excels, ensuring traceability, opposing shark finning, and eradicating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices. Thai Union Group PCL, a global seafood leader for over four decades, continues to deliver high-quality, innovative seafood products worldwide. With a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation, Thai Union maintains a significant presence in the international market with a diverse brand portfolio and a dedication to responsible business practices, as evidenced by its continuous recognition in sustainability indices and memberships in global sustainability initiatives.
