On January 16, 2023, in Samut Sakhon, Thai Union Group PCL joined forces with the Scholars of Sustenance Foundation (SOS) to enhance awareness about food waste and nutrition through the School of Sustenance Program in six local schools across Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram provinces. This initiative aimed to educate students and teachers on managing food waste effectively, for instance, through composting, and to increase understanding of food surplus and its impact on food security and climate change. The program also emphasized the importance of nutritional knowledge and maintaining a healthy diet. Participants were taught how to interpret nutrition labels on food packaging, focusing on the energy, sugar, fat, and sodium content, enabling them to make healthier food choices. Over 180 students from various schools, including Wat Srisudtharam School and Wat Ang Thong School, have been involved in the program since its launch in September 2022, aligning with Thai Union’s mission to promote “Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans.” Sasiwan Jaiarsa, Senior Community Coordinator at Scholars of Sustenance Foundation, highlighted the project's objectives to instill healthy eating habits in children, emphasizing the importance of making informed food choices for personal health and environmental sustainability. The project also seeks to educate children on the environmental impacts of food waste and surplus, encouraging everyone to contribute to reducing food waste and hunger. Adam Brennan, Group Director of Sustainability at Thai Union, addressed food waste as a significant global challenge and a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. He stressed the importance of individual actions in reducing food waste, such as cooking and purchasing only the necessary amount of food. The School of Sustenance Program aims to equip students with knowledge on food waste management to foster a more environmentally conscious generation. Thai Union has committed to reducing food loss in its operations by 50 percent by 2025, compared to 2021 levels, and is working to minimize food waste at the retail and consumer levels. Scholars of Sustenance Foundation's research indicates that Thailand produces 9.68 million tons of food waste annually, with 39% being edible food that is discarded. They recommend checking refrigerators for nearly expired food, consuming such items first, and donating any excess food to the foundation to mitigate food waste. Thai Union Group PCL, a global seafood leader, has been delivering high-quality, innovative seafood products worldwide for 45 years. With a diverse brand portfolio and a commitment to sustainability, Thai Union continues to be recognized for its efforts in promoting “Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans,” contributing to various sustainability indices and initiatives.
