The entire photovoltaic system of the brand's establishments is managed by Âmbar Energia. \[JBS\] Swift, a JBS business known for its frozen foods, has reached the milestone of equipping 100 stores with photovoltaic solar panels on their rooftops. This achievement is part of the company's strategy to ensure that by 2025, all the electricity consumed by its street-level establishments comes from renewable and clean energy sources. This pioneering initiative in Brazilian retail is carried out in collaboration with Âmbar Energia, an energy solutions company owned by J&F Investimentos. "Reaching this significant milestone of 100 stores with solar rooftops strengthens Swift's sustainability agenda and reduces our operations' carbon footprint. In line with our commitment to environmental preservation, Swift has been advancing in the use of clean and renewable energy in its own stores and mobile units (vans) since 2019," says Raphael Jacob, the Financial Director and head of Swift's Sustainability programs. In total, 4,801 solar panels have been installed on the rooftops of Swift stores, covering an area of 20,000 square meters. Together, these photovoltaic systems have an installed capacity of 2.3 Megawatt-peak (MWp), enough to supply electricity to 250 families. In 2022, the solar rooftops generated 1,019 million kWh, preventing the emission of 643.251 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). This is equivalent to planting 922 trees annually. By prioritizing solar solutions in its operations, Swift reduces carbon emissions from "scope 2," related to electricity consumption, and reinforces its alignment with JBS's commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2040, aiming to neutralize the net balance of all greenhouse gas emissions from the Company. "The installation of Swift's solar rooftops adds to a series of initiatives we are developing to bring more sustainability and efficiency to our operations, in line with our commitment to being Net Zero," says Maurício Bauer, JBS's Sustainability Director in Brazil. Currently, Swift operates establishments for selling its products in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and the Federal District. The network consists of physical stores, mobile units (vans), and store-in-store sales points located within partner retailers. Beyond the 100 establishments generating their own power through rooftop solar panels, Swift's stores are also powered by solar farms. Currently, 45 brand units receive energy from photovoltaic plants (UFV), such as UFV Âmbar Porto Feliz and UFV Âmbar Saltinho in the interior of São Paulo, and the UFV installed at the distribution center of Flora, a hygiene and cosmetics company of J&F, projects of Âmbar Energia. To date, Âmbar has invested R$ 50 million in Swift's solar energy projects out of a total of R$ 105 million. Since 2021, Âmbar has been diversifying its operations and increasing investments in photovoltaic energy. "With the demand from major partners like JBS and the potential for photovoltaic energy generation in Brazil, we decided that this source would be a priority in our expansion plan," states Marcelo Zanatta, the company's president. The development and management of energy solutions, as in the project with Swift, is one of the company's main growth areas. Âmbar also operates energy generation plants powered by natural gas, among other businesses. The solar rooftops and farms supplying Swift's stores have a total installed capacity of 5.7 MWp, enough to cover 11% of the energy consumed by the establishments. Currently, the emissions avoided by these projects amount to 2,531 tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to planting 3,772 trees each year. Swift's 40 mobile stores, which are vans serving residential complexes, are also equipped with solar panels to power the electrical systems of the vehicles, as well as refrigerators and other components. In addition to using renewable energy, Swift's establishments implement a range of initiatives to make their operations more sustainable. To reduce electricity consumption, each unit is equipped with low-energy refrigerators that emit up to 44% less CO2 than traditional models. The parking areas of the stores utilize the so-called "Green Pavement," a concrete block developed by JBS Environmental that incorporates plastic from in natura product packaging that could not be recycled. The company partners with eureciclo for the environmental compensation of 100% of its packaging, preventing about 2,000 tons of plastic, glass, metal, and paper annually from ending up in landfills. Moreover, the Good for You product line uses green plastic (derived from sugarcane) as the raw material for its packaging.
