On December 8, 2021, Strong Roots, a prominent plant-based frozen food company, and McCain Foods, a global leader in frozen potato specialties and appetizers, announced a strategic alliance. McCain Foods will invest $55 million USD in Strong Roots for a minority stake in the company. This collaboration will allow both companies to meet the increasing global demand for healthy and natural food. Strong Roots and McCain Foods will combine their unique strengths to accelerate Strong Roots' growth and further its mission to revolutionize the freezer aisle with plant-based, eco-friendly food options for everyone. Strong Roots will maintain its independence throughout this process. Strong Roots plans to utilize McCain Foods' global reach to increase its presence in existing markets such as Great Britain, Ireland, and the United States, and to penetrate new markets by collaborating with new retailers. The partnership will also enable Strong Roots to venture into the foodservice market via McCain Foods' out-of-home network. By partnering with Strong Roots, McCain Foods will broaden its product range, catering to an increasing number of consumers seeking healthy, natural, and simple meals that include real fruits and vegetables. The collaboration also reinforces McCain Foods' commitment to environmentally friendly foods. Strong Roots is dedicated to producing sustainably farmed, shipped, and sold products and was the first Irish plant-based food company to receive a B Corp Certificate in 2020\. Samuel Dennigan, Founder and CEO of Strong Roots, and Max Koeune, President & CEO of McCain Foods, expressed their excitement about the partnership and its potential to promote healthier and more sustainable food options globally. The partnership announcement follows several years of rapid growth for Strong Roots since its establishment in 2015\. The company's range of plant-based products, including cauliflower hash browns, mixed root vegetable fries, bites, and burgers, have become popular in Ireland, the UK, and the US. For McCain Foods, this partnership aligns with a series of investments made in recent years to adapt to changing consumer tastes worldwide. These include investments in The Simple Root, SIMULATE, and GoodLeaf Farms. As part of the transaction, Goode Partners LLC, a New York-based consumer private equity fund that led the Series A investment in Strong Roots, will exit the Board of Strong Roots and sell its shareholding, marking a successful exit for the investors.
