Second Harvest Food Bank Welcomes Truckload of Chicken Donated by Tyson Foods and Champions for Kids
On February 10, 2015, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Tyson Foods, Inc. and Champions for Kids generously donated a large quantity of chicken to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. This food bank provides sustenance to 300,000 individuals in the area, with nearly a third of them being children. This donation is part of two donation events in line with the second annual “Be a Hunger Hero” campaign. Clyde Fitzgerald, the executive director for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, expressed his gratitude to Champions for Kids and Tyson Foods for their continuous efforts to combat hunger, particularly among children. He highlighted that in the 18 counties served by the food bank, one in six residents rely on their network for food, and more than one in four children are food insecure. The successful “Be a Hunger Hero” campaign encouraged families to become heroes for those in need, resulting in much-needed donations of protein-rich products. Health experts suggest that meat and poultry, being nutrient-dense foods, are particularly beneficial for those who require more protein, such as children and the elderly. Nationwide, food banks report that meat is the most requested but least available food item. Adelaide Schaeffer, the President and CEO of Champions for Kids, expressed pride in partnering with Tyson Foods to address the needs of children and families across the country. She emphasized the importance of supporting local food banks and teaching children about generosity. Tyson Foods has been actively involved in the fight against hunger for ten years, donating nearly 100 million pounds of protein, equivalent to 300 million meals. The company collaborates with various organizations to raise awareness and feed the hungry across the country. Their ongoing “KNOW Hunger” campaign aims to educate more people and mobilize efforts to eradicate hunger in America.
