On 3rd December 2015, Danish Crown and Westfleisch received approval from the EU Competition Authority in Brussels to move forward with their joint venture, "WESTCROWN". The venture, which will be equally owned by both companies, will focus on the deboning and sale of sow meat. Kjeld Johannesen, the President and Group CEO of Danish Crown, expressed his satisfaction with the approval, stating that the company can now concentrate on commencing production, which is expected to be operational in early 2016\. The company aims to secure better prices for its owners by investing in their own deboning facilities, thereby eliminating an intermediary step and improving earnings for the owners. Christian Leding, a spokesperson for the Westfleisch SCE Executive Board, is eager to see the partnership evolve. He believes that the collaboration in sales and deboning of sows will be highly beneficial for both companies. The company is prepared to shift its production from Schöppingen to the new facility in Dissen near Münster. Danish Crown, which slaughters approximately 325,000 sows in Denmark each year, has been selling these sows as half carcasses primarily to buyers in Germany. Westfleisch currently runs a specialist sow deboning business in Schöppingen near the Dutch border, with a maximum processing capacity of 355,000 animals per year. The joint venture will debone and sell the sow meat from the new WESTCROWN facility in Dissen, south of Osnabrück, Germany. Danish Crown, a cooperative owned by around 8,300 Danish farmers, is one of the top three meat exporters worldwide. Westfleisch, owned by over 4,200 farmers in the north-west of Germany, is one of the top five meat suppliers in Europe.
