The prawn processing plant of Royal Greenland, located in Aalborg, Denmark, has successfully transformed the residual waste from its primary production into a valuable commodity, thereby minimizing waste. The plant, which packages frozen prawns and salted seafood, generates approximately 60 metric tons of prawn waste annually, consisting of tendrils, shell fragments, and so on. Previously, this waste was incinerated. However, these prawn remnants are a rich source of organic nutrients that can be used as a component in animal feed. As a result, Royal Greenland established a partnership with a local mink food manufacturer. At the plant, the waste is gathered daily and frozen. The mink food manufacturer then picks it up every fortnight. The prawn waste substitutes for pure animal nutrient sources. This arrangement benefits both companies and is a sustainable business model, both financially and ecologically. Find out more about Royal Greenland's sustainability initiatives here.
