Norwegian salmon industry gains from Chilean farming improvements

In 2015, Norway and Chile were responsible for 80% of the worldwide supply, with other regions being too insignificant to significantly affect the global market equilibrium and pricing. Therefore, a sustained period of negative growth in Chile could result in a decrease in salmon demand unless Norway's growth can offset it. The primary issue in Chile is SRS, which results in low pricing and quality realization, as well as a worryingly high usage of antibiotics. A successful SRS vaccine is required. Cermaq is involved in research and development for vaccine creation and is also conducting systematic testing of new vaccines. Jon Hindar concluded that a revival of Chilean salmon farming to a sustainable industry is certainly feasible, but there are no immediate solutions.
