The revised suggestion acknowledges that ASC certified farmed salmon is in line with many of Seafood Watch's core values for sustainable seafood production, and it now includes ASC certified farmed salmon in its suggested list of seafood for consumers to purchase. This acknowledgment of the ASC certification is particularly significant in the US market, where the ASC standard is not as well-known as it is in Europe. It will contribute to a positive perception in the industry and among North-American consumers. At Cermaq, we have pledged to produce all our salmon globally in accordance with the ASC standard by 2020, so we are naturally delighted with this acknowledgment from Monterey Bay Aquarium, states Arild Aakre, leader of the North America sales organization. Cermaq has ASC-certified salmon farms in all its production areas; Canada, Chile, and Norway, and can provide ASC-certified salmon to its customers globally. - There is a growing demand from health-conscious consumers who want to know the origin of their food and how it was produced. The ASC certification assures responsible and sustainable production; it's a wise choice for sustainable food production and farmed salmon is a healthy food option, emphasizes Arild Aakre. Farmed salmon has a low carbon footprint from the beginning. The ASC standard establishes a total of 154 performance criteria and 521 compliance criteria, farms that adhere to the ASC standard provide genuine environmental and social advantages. As a member of the Global Salmon Initiative, Cermaq aims to be 100% ASC certified by 2020\. Currently, nearly one-fourth of all farmed salmon produced globally is ASC certified, and members of the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) are the primary providers of ASC farmed salmon globally.
