Recently, ABP UK showed its support for the future of the meat industry at this year’s The Skills Show, the UK’s largest skills and careers event. The show, which took place from the 19th-21st November in Birmingham, gave young adults the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of roles within the meat industry. With everything from cow selfies to taste tests, there was plenty for visitors of the show to get involved with. On Friday 20th, Senior Account Manager and Master Butcher, Dave Smith, took part in the Spotlight Talk, where he showed that the meat industry has so much to offer in terms of a career, highlighting roles in IT and purchasing. ABP UK also supported the butchery competition at the show, by donating half a ton of meat. The competition tested entrants’ skill, innovation, creativity, presentation, work ethic, method and approach to tasks, carcass and primal utilisation, waste and safe and hygienic working practice. Mandy Thompson, People Change Talent Manager, commented: “At ABP we are always keen to encourage young people into the industry and show them just how diverse a career in this sector can be. The Skills Show was a huge success for us, as it allowed us to meet hundreds of young people over the course of the three days and demonstrate all the different career paths that are on offer with us. The show also allowed us to showcase our highly successful Graduate Training Programme and the ABP UK Apprenticeship Scheme. “The Skills Show is a great example of the hard work that goes into inspiring the future of the meat industry across the company day in, day out. We have several initiatives with local colleges across the country and regularly take part in talks and workshops.” To see more about what went on at our stand please visit www.abpfoodgroup.com/skillsshow To find out more about the skills show please visit: http://www.findafuture.org.uk/the-skills-show
