McCain Foods (Canada) has declared a $75 million investment in infrastructure for its facilities in Portage la Prairie and Carberry, Manitoba. This move is aimed at bolstering the company's potato processing operations in Western Canada. Jeff DeLapp, President, North America, McCain Foods Limited, stated that these investments reflect McCain's ongoing dedication to its growers, employees, and the communities in Manitoba where it operates. Between 2016 and 2019, McCain has allocated $45 million to the Portage la Prairie facility. This includes the installation of a new high-efficiency potato sorting system, advanced processing and packaging equipment, and a new onsite waste water treatment. Upgrades to the heating, freezing, and refrigeration systems will enhance the facility’s environmental performance. Over the same period, the Carberry plant has received just over $30 million in investment. This includes new auto sampling equipment, a blanching system, and improved heating and refrigeration systems, among other upgrades. Manitoba growers annually harvest about 26,300 hectares of potatoes, which is about one-fifth of Canada's total potato crop. McCain's $75 million investment reflects the ongoing demand for its frozen potato and potato specialty products in both the retail and food service sectors, and underscores the company’s long-term commitment to Manitoba. McCain Foods (Canada) is the Canadian arm of McCain Foods Limited, a global leader in the frozen food industry. McCain is the world's largest producer of frozen potato specialties, and also manufactures other quality products such as appetizers, vegetables, and desserts. The company operates eight production facilities in Canada, employing approximately 2,600 people.
