Leading the Charge in the Blue Revolution
Mowi has been at the forefront of the Blue Revolution, making significant progress towards sustainability in recent years. However, there is still a long way to go. As pioneers of this revolution, we are dedicated to sustainably increasing ocean-based food production to cater to the rising global population. We are confident that our proactive approach to environmental conservation and innovation will allow us to fully utilize this invaluable natural resource, while also addressing critical issues such as climate change and plastic pollution to protect the ocean for future generations. Mowi's Contribution to UN Sustainability Goals Every member of the Mowi team is driven by the desire to positively impact the planet. Despite already being the world's most sustainable animal protein producer (as ranked by the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index from 2019 to 2021), we are not resting on our laurels. In our groundbreaking Blue Revolution Plan, we pledge to maximize our contribution to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals urge governments, individuals, and industries from the 193 member states to work together to promote sustainable development. As one of the top seafood companies globally, we are in a unique position to contribute to these SDGs and address the challenges facing humanity. This is a cause we deeply believe in. Commitment to Reducing Plastic and Lowering CO2 Emissions Our commitment to the planet is unwavering. By 2025, we aim to ensure that all our plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable, making it easier for consumers to make sustainable choices. By 2023, we plan to reuse or recycle all our farming plastic equipment. Despite our farmed salmon already having a minimal carbon footprint compared to land-based proteins, we are fully committed to reducing our GHG emissions by 35% by 2030 and 73% by 2050. To accelerate this transition to a low carbon economy, Mowi's Chief HR Officer, Anne Lorgen-Riise, recently announced a 50% reduction in business flights in 2021/22 compared to 2019. This move will reduce our global CO2 emissions from business flights by an impressive 250T – equivalent to removing 49.3 cars from the road for an entire year. Sustainable Feed and Healthy Fish As the world's largest producer of Atlantic salmon, we take our responsibility to ensure that our feed ingredients are sustainably produced very seriously. In recent years, Mowi has worked closely with the Brazilian soy industry to ensure that their crop is part of a clean supply chain and is 100% deforestation-free. With all our marine raw materials certified and 100% of our feed raw materials traceable, over 100 of our global sites have now been certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). We are thrilled about the implementation of Mowi 4.0 Smart Farming – a new initiative that will revolutionize our production and industrial practices faster than ever before in our 57-year history. This groundbreaking smart technology, developed after years of research, will not only improve fish health and welfare but also significantly enhance productivity and sustainability, helping us reach our ambitious goals sooner. Waste Management and Circular Economy Mowi has adopted an innovative approach to waste management, embracing a circular economy model. This approach is helping us achieve our goal of sending zero waste to landfill at our processing plants by 2025 and significantly improving freshwater use efficiency. Our 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recapture' policy resulted in 900 tonnes of nets being up-cycled to swimwear or carpets in 2020, while nearly 50,000 tonnes of by-products from our farmed salmon have been used in non-salmon aquaculture and pet feed, significantly reducing our environmental footprint. Sustainability is more than just a buzzword for Mowi; it's a deeply ingrained ethos. We have aligned with the United Nations' SDGs not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it's the only thing to do – for us, for the planet, and for future generations. We are convinced that by working in harmony with the ocean to produce more sustainable food, we can be part of the solution. That's why everyone at Mowi is dedicated to providing a growing global population with delicious, healthy ocean-based food in a way that respects the planet and allows local communities to thrive. Leading the Blue Revolution is no easy task, but the positive impact of our sustainability initiatives so far – and the potential for even greater impact in the future – inspires us to do more.
