The panel of judges for the upcoming ABP Angus Youth Challenge semi-final, scheduled for Friday, 9th March, at Loughry College, has been unveiled. This panel comprises experts from prominent entities in the agriculture and food production industry. The competition will be evaluated by a distinguished group including Elliot Bell, Senior Policy Officer at the Ulster Farmers Union; Michael Bell, Executive Director of the Northern Ireland Food & Drink Association; Francis Breen, a CAFRE Advisor for the Better Farm Beef Challenge; Conall Donnelly, CEO of the Northern Ireland Meat Exporters Association; Edith Finlay, a Subject Officer at the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment; John Henning, a Company Director and Angus Breeder; Dr. Sam Kennedy, the Head of Education Services at CAFRE; Mairead Lavery, the Managing Editor of Country Living Magazine; Seamus McMenanim, an Economist at the Livestock & Meat Commission; Farm Manager John Meade; Aurelie Moralis, a Veterinary Consultant for Zoetis UK in Northern Ireland; Naomi Rutherford, an Agriculture PhD Student currently with the Agrifood & Biosciences Institute; and James Speers, the President of the Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster. During the event, the judges will split into two groups to review the exhibits presented by the 11 semi-finalist teams. These projects will highlight innovative and creative solutions related to Angus beef, aiming to enhance the visibility of Northern Irish beef and its significance to the regional agricultural economy. The semi-finalists, aged between 14 to 16 years, include a balanced representation of both genders from various parts of the province. The announcement of the three teams advancing to the final round of the ABP Angus Youth Challenge will be made post-Easter. These teams will then receive Angus cross calves at a ceremony on 18th May during the 150th Balmoral Show, and will participate in a comprehensive 18-month training program with ABP covering the entire agricultural process. The ABP Angus Youth Challenge is a collaborative effort between ABP and the Northern Irish Angus Producer Group.
