Aligned with the concept of a circular economy, JBS Environmental is converting waste from JBS's production facilities into high-value products \[JBS Disclosure\]. JBS Environmental, a subsidiary of JBS New Businesses tasked with converting waste from JBS's production facilities into high-value products, is set to broaden the circular economy within the company's operations in Brazil. The firm recently launched two new facilities in Dourados-MS and Mozarlândia-GO, with plans to open five more by the end of the year. The investment in these new operations totals R$ 13 million. JBS Environmental, headquartered at the JBS unit in Lins (SP), previously managed 11 units at JBS's production and processing plants across Brazil. In addition to the two newly opened facilities, four more units will be established at Seara plants located in Guapiaçu (SP), Jaguariúna (SP), Amparo (SP), and at the Anhanguera Distribution Center (SP); one unit at the Massa Leve plant in Rio Grande da Serra (SP), and another at the Marba plant in São Bernardo do Campo (SP). This expansion will bring the total to 18 operational units by the end of 2021\. “JBS Environmental units are tasked with ensuring all solid waste from JBS's industrial operations is properly disposed of and recycled, creating new products and reintroducing them into the production cycle as added-value,” highlighted Susana Carvalho, Executive Director of JBS Environmental. “For instance, with plastic packaging waste, we ensure its recycling and use within JBS's own operations in Brazil. In the so-called Closed Loop of Plastic, waste serves as raw materials for a new cycle and is transformed into recycled products such as bags and sacks for various uses: plastic tarps; plastic covers; shrink films, plastic pallets, slats, as well as plastic cages for poultry transport and the Green Floor,” she added. Environmental solutions and new business opportunities Besides recycling materials like plastic, metal, and paper, JBS Environmental also explores alternatives for the best possible disposal of non-recyclable materials. This effort led to the creation of the Green Floor, developed by the company using the trimmings of multi-layer packaging (PVDC), a plastic used in vacuum-packed fresh products that is difficult to recycle. “The Green Floor is already being used in paving projects by JBS across the country, including in Lins, at the JBS Environmental headquarters, covering an area of 2,200 m² - equivalent to over five tons of plastic trimmings diverted from landfills,” informed Susana Carvalho. The Green Floor has advanced the concept of Circular Economy within JBS, proving the company's ongoing commitment to identifying opportunities and finding technical solutions for the optimal disposal of waste generated from its production processes.
