Groundbreaking for Tyson Foods’ New Poultry Plant in Western Tennessee

Humboldt, Tenn. — May 30, 2018 — Tyson Foods, Inc. executives, in conjunction with local and state officials, initiated construction today at the future location of Tyson's new chicken processing facility in Humboldt, the most populous city in Gibson County, western Tennessee. The project, estimated to cost around $300 million, is projected to generate over 1,500 local employment opportunities once the new complex is operational, anticipated to be in late 2019. Tyson Foods also disclosed that it will be granting Gibson County a $500,000 community fund, along with the establishment of a local steering committee to determine the allocation of the funds. The committee will consist of community leaders and members of the Tyson Foods team. “Today is a significant day for West Tennessee and our flourishing poultry industry as we officially welcome Tyson Foods to Gibson County. The company’s decision to bring 1,500 new jobs will have a remarkable impact on the local economy,” stated U.S. Representative David Kustoff (TN-08). “I express my gratitude to Tyson Foods president and CEO, Tom Hayes, and the entire Tyson Foods team for their continued investment in the wonderful citizens and communities of West Tennessee.” The facility will be situated within the Gibson County Industrial Park and will manufacture pre-packaged trays of fresh chicken for retail grocery stores across the country. It is projected to process 1.25 million birds per week, augmenting Tyson Foods’ overall production capacity by the same quantity. The payroll and payments to farmers from the new operation, along with its purchase of grain and utilities, is projected to generate an annual economic benefit to the state of Tennessee of approximately $150 million. “This day signifies the realization of 20 years of vision, hard work and commitment by many leaders and citizens of Gibson County,” stated Kingsley Brock, director of economic development, Gibson County. “Tyson Foods is a world-class company with world-class team members, and Gibson County and Humboldt will be home to the world’s most advanced, high-tech poultry processing plant. The company’s capital investment and job creation will forever alter the landscape of Humboldt and Gibson County and create immense opportunity for all our citizens, and I could not be more thrilled for all of Gibson County.” This is the second major economic development project Tyson Foods has launched in Tennessee within the past year. In August, 2017, the company disclosed an $84 million expansion of its Union City operations, which is projected to generate about 300 jobs, in addition to the more than 1,000 jobs currently at the facility. Including Union City, the company currently operates four facilities in the state, employing about 5,000 with an annual payroll of more than $181 million. In its 2016 fiscal year, Tyson Foods paid Tennessee farmers more than $61 million. The company estimates its total statewide annual impact for fiscal 2016, including payroll, grain purchases, utilities, property taxes and charitable contributions to be more than $313 million. “Today signifies another crucial step in our journey with the people of Humboldt and Gibson County,” stated Doug Ramsey, group president of Poultry for Tyson Foods. “We’re eager to get started, get to work and continue the successful working relationship we’ve had with the state of Tennessee for more than four decades.” Contact Information • Farmers and ranchers who are interested in raising chickens for the new poultry complex are encouraged to e-mail TennesseeProjectFarmers@tyson.com. • Farmers who are interested in selling Tyson Foods local grain for feed should e-mail LocalGrainServices@tyson.com • Contractors who are interested in construction of the complex should e-mail TennesseeProjectConstruction@tyson.com • Companies that wish to be suppliers for the project or related operations should e-mail TennesseeProjectSupply@tyson.com • Those who want to work for Tyson Foods are encouraged to frequently check the Tyson Foods Careers website.
