Ground Beef Recall Issued for Specific 5-pound Packages

On June 3, 2015, Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc., based in Springdale, Arkansas, announced a voluntary recall of about 16,000 pounds of 80% Lean Ground Beef in 5-pound packages. The product was supplied to a single food distributor in the state of New York. During a routine sampling program, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the presence of E. coli O157:H7 in a product sample. No illnesses related to this product have been reported so far. The recall is a precautionary measure, and Tyson Fresh Meats is currently tracking the affected product and putting it on hold. Around 200 cases of this ground beef were manufactured at a single plant on May 16, 2015. Each 5-pound package carries the establishment code 245C and a "best before or freeze by" date of June 5, 2015. The product cases can be identified by the code D-0371-BH, which is printed on the outer label. Food safety specialists recommend that consumers properly prepare their raw meat products, both fresh and frozen, and only eat ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160 °F. The only method to ensure that ground beef is cooked to a temperature sufficient to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature.
