In the 2019 ABP Angus Youth Challenge, a program aimed at enhancing farm-to-fork skills among local youths, the finalist schools include Aughnalcoy College and Fivemiletown College from Co. Tyrone, the Royal Belfast Academical Institution (RBAI), and Wallace High School in Lisburn. These four teams are set to each receive five Aberdeen Angus cross calves at the Balmoral Show on May 17th. In addition to raising these calves, the group of 15 teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, will benefit financially from their sale to ABP and engage in a comprehensive 18-month skills development initiative. Their projects will concentrate on creating innovative solutions for the beef supply chain in Northern Ireland. Moreover, one team will secure a £1,000 prize for their school. ABP, a major agri-business with a workforce of 10,000 across 35 locations, including two facilities in Northern Ireland at Newry and Lurgan, hosted an induction day at its Newry site. Here, the finalists had the opportunity to explore the processing plant and gain insights into ABP's operations and its collaborative efforts with over 4,000 local farmers. This partnership ensures the provision of quality-assured beef and lamb from Northern Ireland to prominent retailers and top-tier restaurants in the UK and internationally.
