This week, a group of 26 students along with their educators from six schools in Northern Ireland are visiting Belgium for a comprehensive farm-to-fork study excursion. The visit, spanning three days, is a component of a professional development opportunity for those reaching the final stages of the 2022 ABP Angus Youth Challenge. Initiating their journey at ABP Newry, the group proceeded to the Lismullin culinary school in Navan. Here, the young participants were introduced to butchery skills by Kettyle Irish Foods and had the chance to prepare their ideal Angus steak. Insights into the global demand for Northern Irish Angus Beef were shared by professionals from ABP Ireland and Certified Irish Angus before the group's departure to Belgium. While in Belgium, the students are accommodated at the Irish College Leuven. They are scheduled to present their ongoing projects as finalists of the ABP Angus Youth Challenge to the Flanders Farmers Union. Their itinerary also includes a visit to an Angus beef farm. On their concluding day, the group will travel to Brussels for meetings with the NI Executive Office and Invest NI, alongside interactions with ABP Belgium staff to gain insights into the agricultural-food sector and employment with ABP. Their schedule is further enriched with educational tours to the renowned Great War memorials and museums in West Flanders. Liam McCarthy, ABP’s Head of Supply Chain Development, who is escorting the group along with colleagues from ABP and Certified Irish Angus, remarked, “The ABP Angus Youth initiative is pivotal in equipping young individuals with the knowledge and skills required for a successful transition into our industry. The study tour represents just one of the numerous advantages of participating in the competition.” Charles Smith from the Certified Irish Angus Producer Group commented, “The study tour stands out as a key experience for finalists of the ABP Angus Youth Challenge. Given the significant disruptions to education caused by the pandemic, we aimed to make this year’s trip exceptionally memorable for both the students and their educators. The ABP Angus Youth Challenge is set to accept new entries in September. We encourage 14-15 year olds entering Year 11, along with their parents and teachers, to express their interest now at www.abpangusyouthchallenge.com.”
