Exploring whether COVID-19 has permanently increased salmon demand
Arild Aakre, the Head of Global Sales, states that the worldwide demand is currently very robust, with persistent high demand from retail and the food service industry returning to its usual state. The US market, for instance, despite a 14% growth, has maintained high prices throughout the year. Import prices for Chilean salmon have risen by 28% compared to 2020. It's not a new concept that consumers are aware of the health benefits of consuming salmon. It appears that they have also discovered how simple it is to cook for both daily meals and special events. "Many of us, including myself, typically prepare a limited number of dishes. This extended period of staying at home has been challenging, but it has also provided an opportunity to explore and try new recipes. Salmon seems to be a popular choice," adds Arild Aakre. The increased consumption of seafood, particularly fatty fish like salmon, aligns with dietary guidelines. Another possible reason for consumers could be that salmon has a smaller carbon footprint compared to land animal meat. This is also the foundation for the Blue Food Assessment's conclusion that the growth in global food production must originate from the ocean.
