In the upcoming months, Lamb Weston EMEA will be sharing some enticing 'potato sound bites' on social media. At Lamb Weston, potatoes are the star of the show, forming the foundation of their products and marking the beginning of their story. They view potatoes as a natural product with limitless potential and aim to delve deeper into what makes this crop so valuable. Understanding the potential of a potato involves knowing every facet of it, from planting to harvesting, and from its nutritional content to the specific qualities of each variety. Only by knowing what to use can one control the process and unlock the power of the potato. A potato plant's true beauty lies in its roots. Potatoes are a fantastic crop, packed with healthy nutrients such as minerals like potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, as well as vitamin C and various types of vitamin B. This makes them more nutrient-dense than other carbohydrate sources. Lamb Weston uses about fifteen different potato species, each with its own unique qualities. They carefully nurture these qualities by collaborating with their farmers, collecting potatoes from over 600 farmers in various regions daily to ensure the crop remains in optimal condition. Although potatoes were initially brought to Europe by the Spaniards, Lamb Weston's potatoes primarily come from the HAFPAL-region, which stands for Hannover, Frankfurt, Paris, and LeHavre. Lamb Weston EMEA also grows their potatoes in the UK and Austria. Their factories are situated in these same regions, allowing them to prepare their products locally. Here, they process the potatoes into various shapes and sizes and package them meticulously. The potato planting season begins in mid-February, with the first harvest taking place in June and lasting until October. Depending on the potato variety and harvest time, a potato can have different qualities. For example, a floury texture indicates a high starch content. For fries, Lamb Weston requires potatoes with a higher water content, making them slightly waxier. The entire process is managed with great care and attention to maintain the potatoes' health. Lamb Weston EMEA collaborates with farmers to make the crop more disease-resistant and reduce the use of plant protection products. After harvesting, most of their potatoes are stored in special facilities where the temperature is continuously monitored to ensure year-round quality fries. Potatoes are not only healthy and nutritious but also highly sustainable. Compared to rice, potatoes require five times less water and less land to grow. Additionally, about 80% of a potato plant is edible, making it an extremely efficient food source. Given the sustainability of this crop, it's crucial to make sustainable choices. Climate change significantly impacts their products, and Lamb Weston EMEA is committed to addressing this responsibly. They not only locate their factories where their potatoes are grown but also dedicate themselves to sustainable cultivation. Lamb Weston EMEA concentrates on soil health to create optimal conditions for their primary ingredient. By maintaining the right balance of organic materials, they promote healthy root growth. In turn, healthy roots produce a robust potato plant capable of absorbing all the necessary nutrients. This healthy plant, resistant to diseases and pests, becomes the source of Lamb Weston's sustainable potato products. Follow our LinkedIn page in English to stay updated.
